As of October 2026, AI assistants mostly help people find, compare and shortlist products, and the sale usually finishes on the merchant's own site. Checkout inside an assistant is real but narrow: it's mostly for US shoppers, and merchants get in through Shopify, a payments partner such as PayPal, or an early-access program. So the work that pays now is making your store easy to read and easy to pick. Let the right crawlers in, put price and stock in plain HTML, send clean feeds to Google, Microsoft and OpenAI, publish shipping and returns in machine-readable form, and measure what comes back.

The clearest signal came from OpenAI. In March 2026 it [said](https://openai.com/index/powering-product-discovery-in-chatgpt/) the first version of Instant Checkout "did not offer the level of flexibility that we aspire to provide" and let merchants use their own checkout while it focuses on product discovery. Google and Microsoft are still building checkout inside their assistants, US first.

## Where can AI assistants find and sell your products today?

| Assistant | What shoppers get | How products get in | Checkout |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| ChatGPT | Product results, comparisons, visual browsing | OAI-SearchBot crawling, Shopify Catalog, Etsy, approved direct feeds | On your site. Shopping is live in the US |
| Google AI Mode and Gemini | Shopping Graph listings, Universal Cart in the US | Merchant Center feeds and crawled pages | Google Pay via UCP for select merchants |
| Microsoft Copilot | Shopping answers, Copilot Checkout | Microsoft Merchant Center, Shopify, PayPal, Stripe | In Copilot, US buyers paying in USD |
| Perplexity | Free shopping for US users | PayPal store sync, PerplexityBot crawling | Instant Buy with PayPal, US only |
| Meta | Shopping on Meta surfaces, including Muse when available | Shopify Catalog, shared by default since September 2026 | Shopify checkout in the US, Canada and Mexico |

### ChatGPT

OpenAI [launched Instant Checkout](https://openai.com/index/buy-it-in-chatgpt/) in September 2025 with US Etsy sellers and the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), built with Stripe. Its [merchant FAQ](https://chatgpt.com/merchants) now says it's "moving away from a standalone Instant Checkout experience" and that purchases finish on merchant-owned sites or apps. The [help center](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/11128490) still mentions an Instant Checkout option on some eligible products. Don't plan around it. ACP survives as the way merchants send feeds and promotions. Shopify and Etsy catalogs are already integrated, and everyone else can apply for direct feeds, which OpenAI [onboards for approved partners](https://developers.openai.com/commerce/guides/get-started) for now. The FAQ adds that you don't need a feed if ChatGPT already crawls your site, but a feed gives you more control. There are no fees on purchases that start in ChatGPT.

### Google AI Mode and Gemini

Google's shopping answers draw on its Shopping Graph, which [Google says](https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/products/shopping/google-shopping-cart/) holds over 60 billion listings, and Merchant Center is how your data gets in. In January 2026 Google [announced the Universal Commerce Protocol](https://blog.google/products/ads-commerce/agentic-commerce-ai-tools-protocol-retailers-platforms/) (UCP), co-developed with Shopify, Etsy and large retailers, to put a checkout button on eligible listings in AI Mode and the Gemini app. Google's [help center](https://support.google.com/merchants/answer/16837055?hl=en) says that checkout is open to select merchants, uses Google Pay, and covers products eligible in the US, Canada and Australia, while its [onboarding page](https://support.google.com/merchants/answer/16992327?hl=en) says Merchant Center onboarding is rolling out in the US first. Listings opt in with the `native_commerce` attribute. [Universal Cart](https://support.google.com/gemini/answer/17085590?hl=en), announced in May, is US-only and either checks out with Google Pay or fills the cart on your site. Google [says](https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/products/shopping/shopping-updates-google-marketing-live/) UCP reaches the UK later, with no date.

### Microsoft Copilot

Microsoft [launched Copilot Checkout](https://about.ads.microsoft.com/en/blog/post/january-2026/conversations-that-convert-copilot-checkout-and-brand-agents) in January 2026 with PayPal, Shopify and Stripe, and you stay merchant of record. By [April](https://about.ads.microsoft.com/en/blog/post/april-2026/win-across-all-three-eras-of-the-web) its catalog covered more than 500,000 merchants, and UCP feeds were generally available in Microsoft Merchant Center in the US. [Checkout eligibility](https://about.ads.microsoft.com/en/solutions/technology/agentic-commerce) is narrow: English-language merchants selling to US buyers in US dollars, through Microsoft Merchant Center with a UCP-compliant feed or an approved payments partner. Keep Bingbot unblocked, since [Copilot citations now show up](https://blogs.bing.com/webmaster/February-2026/Introducing-AI-Performance-in-Bing-Webmaster-Tools-Public-Preview) in Bing Webmaster Tools.

### Perplexity

Perplexity made [shopping free for US users](https://www.perplexity.ai/hub/blog/shopping-that-puts-you-first) in November 2025 and added Instant Buy with PayPal, with the retailer as merchant of record. Merchants can join through [PayPal's store sync](https://newsroom.paypal-corp.com/2025-11-PayPal-and-Perplexity-Launch-Instant-Buy), and Perplexity's [help center](https://www.perplexity.ai/help-center/en/articles/12932923-instant-buy-buy-with-paypal) lists Wayfair, Abercrombie & Fitch and thousands of merchants on BigCommerce, Shopware and Wix among Instant Buy sellers.

### What Shopify switches on for you

On Shopify, most of this is already on. [Agentic Storefronts](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-sales-channels/agentic-storefronts) is active by default for eligible stores and shares your catalog with ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, and since [September 8, 2026](https://changelog.shopify.com/posts/meta-is-now-an-ai-channel-in-your-admin), Meta. Direct checkout is on by default for Google, Copilot and Meta, while ChatGPT sends buyers to your own checkout. The [ChatGPT](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-sales-channels/agentic-storefronts/chatgpt) and [Copilot](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-sales-channels/agentic-storefronts/microsoft) channels require you to sell to US customers, and the [Meta channel](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-sales-channels/agentic-storefronts/meta) covers the US, Canada and Mexico. Open Sales channels, then Agentic, in your admin to see what's live. Brands on other platforms can list in Shopify Catalog through the Agentic plan, which Shopify [says](https://www.shopify.com/news/agentic-commerce-momentum) is available globally.

## What do AI assistants read on a product page?

Crawlers read your pages, and feeds deliver data straight from your catalog. Both need to say the same thing.

![Flow diagram: product pages, structured data, product feed, reviews and shipping details pass through crawler access to an AI assistant, which builds a shortlist that leads to checkout.](https://roasexpert.com/hubfs/roas-expert-visuals/agentic-seo-how-assistants-choose.svg)

Assistants can only recommend what they can reach and read.

The fields that get you picked are plain ones: price and currency, stock status, variants, brand and GTIN, shipping cost and speed, return window, and reviews. OpenAI's [help center](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/11128490) says ChatGPT ranks merchants on "availability, price, quality, and whether they are the maker or primary seller of that item." That last factor favors DTC brands, but only if the assistant can tell you're the maker. OpenAI's [feed spec](https://developers.openai.com/commerce/specs/file-upload/products) requires nine fields, including brand, seller name, availability and price, and accepts optional ones such as GTIN, MPN, shipping price, return terms and review counts. Google's [merchant listing markup](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/structured-data/merchant-listing) asks for the same core data.

Two problems trip stores up. The first is JavaScript. In [Vercel's December 2024 analysis](https://vercel.com/blog/the-rise-of-the-ai-crawler), none of the major AI crawlers it tracked rendered JavaScript, including all three OpenAI crawlers and PerplexityBot. Google's and Apple's crawlers were the exceptions. Google warns about its own systems too: JavaScript-generated Product markup "can make Shopping crawls less frequent and less reliable," according to its [merchant listing documentation](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/structured-data/merchant-listing). If price, stock or your JSON-LD only appear after scripts run, many assistants see a product page with no price.

The second is mismatches. Merchant Center's [automatic item updates](https://support.google.com/merchants/answer/3246284?hl=en), normally on, read the structured data on your landing pages, update listings whose price or availability doesn't match, and can disapprove products that change too often. Google's [guidance for AI features](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features) asks for structured data that matches the visible text. One price in the feed, another in the markup and a third on the page gives an assistant no reason to trust any of them.

## The checklist, in priority order

This is the order we work in during an [agentic SEO audit](https://roasexpert.com/agentic-seo). Each step depends on the one before.

1. Let the search crawlers in. In `robots.txt`, allow `OAI-SearchBot`, `PerplexityBot`, `Bingbot` and `Googlebot`. [OpenAI says](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/bots) sites that block OAI-SearchBot won't be shown in ChatGPT search answers, and changes take about 24 hours. Blocking `GPTBot` only opts you out of model training, and OpenAI treats each bot separately. `Google-Extended` doesn't affect Google Search, where AI Overviews and AI Mode live, but it [does control](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/crawling-indexing/google-common-crawlers) grounding in the Gemini app. Block it only if you accept that trade.
2. Check the firewall, not just robots.txt. Cloudflare [began blocking AI crawlers by default](https://www.cloudflare.com/press/press-releases/2025/cloudflare-just-changed-how-ai-crawlers-scrape-the-internet-at-large/) for new domains in July 2025, and in 2026 it [split AI traffic](https://blog.cloudflare.com/content-independence-day-ai-options/) into Search, Agent and Training, with new defaults from September 15. Agent covers chat fetchers and browser agents acting for a shopper, the kind of request ChatGPT-User makes. In Cloudflare's Security settings, set Search and Agent to allow and decide Training on its merits. Then check [AI Crawl Control](https://developers.cloudflare.com/ai-crawl-control/), available on every plan, to confirm no search crawler is blocked, Googlebot and Bingbot included. On any CDN, make sure OpenAI's published IP ranges get through.
3. Put price, stock and variants in the HTML. Fetch a product page with `curl` or with JavaScript switched off. The raw HTML should contain the name, price, currency, availability, the selected variant and your Product JSON-LD. Storefronts built as single-page apps are the usual risk, because they assemble the page in the browser.
4. Send feeds everywhere they're accepted. Use Google Merchant Center for AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Merchant Center for Copilot, an application to OpenAI unless you're on Shopify or Etsy, and PayPal store sync for Perplexity. On Shopify, confirm your products meet [Shopify Catalog's requirements](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/shopify-catalog/requirements), which include a title, at least one image, a price above zero and publication to your online store. Our guide to [product feeds for AI shopping](https://roasexpert.com/blog/product-feeds-for-ai-shopping) covers the attribute mapping.
5. Fill in identifiers and attributes. Give every variant a stable ID and every product a brand and GTIN, or an MPN where no GTIN exists. Put color, size, material and dimensions in their own fields. Update sale prices when a sale starts and ends, and tag feed URLs with something like `utm_medium=feed` so feed clicks show up separately, as OpenAI's [best-practice guide](https://developers.openai.com/commerce/guides/best-practices) suggests.
6. Mark up Product and Offer. Server-render JSON-LD with `price`, `priceCurrency`, `availability`, `brand`, `gtin` and `sku`. Add `aggregateRating` and `review` only when shoppers can [see those reviews](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/structured-data/review-snippet) on the page. Put your standard [shipping](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/structured-data/shipping-policy) and [return](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/structured-data/return-policy) policies at the organization level with `hasShippingService` and `hasMerchantReturnPolicy`, and override per product only where terms differ.
7. Set policies in Merchant Center too. Enter return policy, shipping and customer support details in Google and Microsoft Merchant Center. Google uses those settings over on-site markup when both exist, and Google's [UCP checkout](https://developers.google.com/merchant/ucp/guides/merchant-center) and Copilot Checkout both require return and support details. Shopify's AI channels also require published terms of service, privacy and refund policies.
8. Decide on in-assistant checkout last. If you sell to US shoppers, apply for Google's UCP checkout and Copilot Checkout once the first seven steps are clean, and make a deliberate call on Shopify's direct checkout toggles. Subscriptions, personalized goods, pre-orders and age-restricted products can't use Google's checkout. If you sell only into the UK and Europe, none of these checkouts are open to you yet, so steps one to seven are the job.

## What can you ignore for now?

llms.txt. Google's [guidance for AI Overviews and AI Mode](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features) says you don't need "new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup" to appear. In June 2026 Google's John Mueller said "none of the AI systems use it," as [reported by Search Engine Journal](https://www.searchenginejournal.com/google-says-llms-txt-is-purely-speculative-for-now/577576/), and [SE Ranking's study](https://seranking.com/blog/llms-txt/) of 300,000 domains found no correlation between having the file and AI citations. It's harmless, and it fixes nothing above.

A ChatGPT app. OpenAI's [merchant FAQ](https://chatgpt.com/merchants) says apps are "best suited for larger merchants who want more control over the shopping and purchase experience." Most DTC brands should start with feeds.

Protocol builds before you're accepted. OpenAI's feed onboarding and Google's UCP checkout are both gated, and Shopify handles the integration for its merchants. On Magento, WooCommerce or BigCommerce, get accepted first, then build. Our post on [agentic SEO for Magento and Adobe Commerce](https://roasexpert.com/blog/agentic-seo-for-magento-and-adobe-commerce) covers that route.

WebMCP and AP2. [WebMCP](https://github.com/webmachinelearning/webmcp) is a draft specification from a W3C community group, with Google and Microsoft authors, for exposing a site's functions to AI agents as tools. [AP2](https://cloud.google.com/blog/products/ai-machine-learning/announcing-agents-to-payments-ap2-protocol), Google's Agent Payments Protocol, uses signed mandates to prove what a shopper approved before an agent pays. Watch both. Neither needs work from you this quarter.

## How do you measure AI assistant traffic?

Start in GA4. Since [May 2026](https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/9164320?hl=en), Google Analytics has a default [AI Assistant channel](https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/9756891?hl=en) for visits from sources like ChatGPT, Gemini, DeepSeek, Copilot and Grok. It excludes Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, which [Search Console counts](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features) inside your overall search traffic. ChatGPT also [adds utm\_source=chatgpt.com](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/12627856-publishers-and-developers-faq) to its links. Check the Traffic acquisition report by session source and medium to confirm those visits land in AI Assistant, not Referral or Unassigned. If they don't, build a [custom channel group](https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/13051316?hl=en) under Admin, Data display, Channel groups, with your AI rule above Referral. It applies retroactively.

Then add the platform reports. Bing Webmaster Tools' [AI Performance report](https://blogs.bing.com/webmaster/February-2026/Introducing-AI-Performance-in-Bing-Webmaster-Tools-Public-Preview), launched in public preview in February 2026, counts citations of your pages in Copilot and Bing's AI summaries. On Shopify, the [Agentic page](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-sales-channels/agentic-storefronts/agentic-home) in your admin reports visits, orders and conversion for each AI channel. Google [said in May](https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/products/shopping/shopping-updates-google-marketing-live/) that Merchant Center would add AI visibility insights, starting with the US, Canada, Australia, India and New Zealand.

Finally, read your server logs every month. Count OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Bingbot and ChatGPT-User requests by page template. If product pages get few crawler visits while blog posts get many, look at internal links, sitemaps and bot rules before you rewrite any copy. Judge the channel on orders and margin, not visits, and give it a full quarter of data before deciding what it's worth.
