# AI visibility for SaaS and AI startups: getting recommended by ChatGPT

When a buyer asks ChatGPT, Gemini or Copilot to recommend software, the assistant runs web searches in the background and builds its shortlist from the pages it finds. You get recommended when those pages describe your product in the buyer's words and independent sources agree. That takes clear category language, pricing and docs that crawlers can read, a place on the comparison and review pages assistants cite, and real discussion in communities and on founders' feeds. Google says [no special files or markup are needed](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features) for its AI features, and progress shows up as a rising share of answers, not a rank.

Buyers have already moved. In [G2's August 2025 survey of more than 1,000 B2B software buyers](https://learn.g2.com/ai-search-surging-for-b2b-buyers), half said they now start the buying journey in an AI chatbot instead of Google Search. G2 runs a review site and has a stake in that answer, so treat it as directional.

## How do AI assistants find software vendors?

They search, read and summarize. [Google describes query fan-out](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features), issuing multiple related searches across subtopics, and says a page only has to be indexed and eligible for a snippet to appear as a link in AI Overviews or AI Mode. [OpenAI says ChatGPT search](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/9237897-chatgpt-search) rewrites a prompt into one or more targeted queries, sometimes sent to partners such as Microsoft. Each assistant reads a different index.

| Assistant | Results come from | What to check |
| --- | --- | --- |
| ChatGPT | OAI-SearchBot index plus partner providers | Allow OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User. GPTBot is for training. |
| Google AI Overviews and AI Mode | Google's search index | Normal indexing. No extra requirements. |
| Gemini app | Grounding from Google's search index | Google-Extended controls grounding as well as training. |
| Microsoft Copilot and Copilot Chat | Queries sent to Bing | Bing indexing and Bing Webmaster Tools. |
| Perplexity | Its own crawler, PerplexityBot | Allow PerplexityBot and its IP ranges. |
| Claude | Anthropic's Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User | Allow both. ClaudeBot is for training. |

The table draws on crawler documentation from [OpenAI](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/bots), [Google](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/crawling-indexing/google-common-crawlers), [Microsoft](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/copilot/microsoft-365/manage-public-web-access), [Perplexity](https://docs.perplexity.ai/guides/bots) and [Anthropic](https://support.claude.com/en/articles/8896518-does-anthropic-crawl-data-from-the-web-and-how-can-site-owners-block-the-crawler).

Two technical problems hide SaaS sites. One is bot blocking at the CDN. [OpenAI asks site owners](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/9237897-chatgpt-search) to confirm their CDN allows its crawler's published IP addresses, and [Cloudflare's AI bot settings](https://developers.cloudflare.com/bots/additional-configurations/block-ai-bots/) now separate search, agent and training bots, with training blocks that also catch crawlers doing both. The other is JavaScript. In [Vercel's December 2024 analysis](https://vercel.com/blog/the-rise-of-the-ai-crawler) of crawler traffic, OpenAI's crawlers, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot didn't execute JavaScript, while Gemini, using Googlebot's infrastructure, did. A pricing table drawn by a script may be invisible to most assistants.

## What does the research say gets software cited?

Rankings help, but they don't decide citations. In [Ahrefs' tracking](https://ahrefs.com/blog/ai-overview-citations-top-10/), 76% of pages cited in AI Overviews ranked in Google's top 10 for the same keyword in July 2025, against about 38% across 863,000 keywords in early 2026, a drop it partly ties to fan-out. In [an earlier Ahrefs test of 15,000 long-tail questions](https://ahrefs.com/blog/ai-search-overlap/), only 12% of links cited by ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot were in Google's top 10. Be the best page for each sub-question a prompt splits into, not just for your head term.

Independent sources carry weight. [University of Toronto researchers](https://arxiv.org/abs/2509.08919) tested 1,000 ranking-style prompts on AI search, using the API versions of GPT-4o search, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude, and classified the cited sources. For US software queries, the GPT model's citations were 72.7% earned media, meaning independent reviews, comparisons and publications, and 26.7% vendor sites. Google's regular results for the same queries were 43.7% vendor sites.

Comparison lists are the most cited page type for recommendation prompts. [Ahrefs analyzed 26,283 source URLs](https://ahrefs.com/blog/best-lists-research/) behind ChatGPT's answers to 750 prompts asking for software, product and agency recommendations. Of those, 43.8% were "best X" blog lists, and 79.1% of the lists it dated had been updated in 2025. Vendors' own pages count too. For software prompts, ChatGPT cited a recommended vendor's own landing pages in 37.2% of prompts, its own "best" lists in 34%, its homepage in 15.6% and its documentation in 7.6%.

Mentions track visibility more closely than links. Across 75,000 brands, [Ahrefs measured](https://ahrefs.com/blog/ai-overview-brand-correlation/) a 0.664 correlation between branded web mentions and appearances in AI Overviews, against 0.218 for backlinks, and stresses that correlation isn't cause. Review sites matter more near the decision. In [an analysis of about 35,000 ChatGPT citations from December 2025, published by G2](https://learn.g2.com/do-software-review-platforms-show-up-more-in-the-bottom-of-the-funnel), review platforms made up 7.4% of citations for discovery prompts and 13.2% for evaluation prompts.

Community sources swing. [Semrush tracked 230,000 prompts](https://www.semrush.com/blog/most-cited-domains-ai/) from July to October 2025 and saw ChatGPT cite Reddit in close to 60% of responses in early August and around 10% by mid-September, with Wikipedia falling from roughly 55% to under 20%. In [a Semrush study of 325,000 prompts](https://www.semrush.com/blog/linkedin-ai-visibility-study/) in early 2026, LinkedIn was the second most cited domain, in about 11% of responses, and individual members made up 59% of its citations in ChatGPT search and AI Mode. In [Ahrefs' 2026 sample](https://ahrefs.com/blog/ai-overview-citations-top-10/), YouTube videos outside the top 100 still made up 5.6% of AI Overview citations.

On the page itself, the best controlled test is the [GEO paper](https://arxiv.org/abs/2311.09735) by Aggarwal and colleagues (KDD 2024). On a 10,000-query benchmark answered by a GPT-3.5 engine, adding statistics and quotations raised a source's visibility by up to 40%, while keyword stuffing slightly hurt. The setup is dated, but specific, checkable claims still get used.

## What assistants look for when they recommend software

### Category language buyers use

Assistants match pages to prompts like "best SOC 2 compliance software for a 30-person startup", and a homepage that says "the future of trust" matches nothing. Put the category, the buyer and the main job in your title tag, H1 and first paragraph. [Bing's February 2026 guidelines update](https://www.searchenginejournal.com/bing-adds-geo-to-official-guidelines-expands-ai-abuse-definitions/568442/), as Search Engine Journal summarized it, asks for facts stated plainly, consistent entity names, one topic per URL and key information near the top.

### Pricing and docs that crawlers can read

Buyers ask what a tool costs and whether it fits their stack. If that isn't on a public, server-rendered page, the assistant guesses or quotes someone else's stale number. Publish plan names, starting prices or the point where sales takes over, usage limits and inclusions, and keep docs, integrations, API references and security pages public. In the [Ahrefs study](https://ahrefs.com/blog/best-lists-research/), vendors' docs were cited in more software prompts than their blog posts, 7.6% against 4.8%. If pricing is still open, read [how to price an AI product](https://roasexpert.com/blog/pricing-an-ai-product). When it changes, [Bing recommends IndexNow](https://blogs.bing.com/webmaster/February-2026/Introducing-AI-Performance-in-Bing-Webmaster-Tools-Public-Preview) so AI answers use the current page.

### Comparison pages and reviews

Find the third-party pages your buyer prompts keep citing and offer their authors a demo account and current facts. Publish your own comparison and alternatives pages too. [Ahrefs found](https://ahrefs.com/blog/best-lists-research/) self-published lists get cited, so write ones a skeptical buyer would trust: say where a competitor is the better pick, explain how you compared, and date the page. For reviews, ask happy customers to post on the site your category's answers cite most, and never tie a reward to a positive rating. The [FTC's 2024 rule](https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/news/press-releases/2024/08/federal-trade-commission-announces-final-rule-banning-fake-reviews-testimonials) bans that, along with fake reviews and undisclosed reviews by staff.

### Community discussion

Google's [guide to its generative AI features](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/fundamentals/ai-optimization-guide) says they can show what's being said about products and services "in blogs, videos, and forum discussions." Have founders and engineers answer real questions where your buyers talk, under their own names with the company named. Reddit's [spam policy](https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/360043504051-Spam) asks people who mostly post links to their own business to be thoughtful about how often they post. Leave Wikipedia alone unless independent coverage earns you an article. Its [conflict of interest guideline](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Conflict_of_interest) says COI editing is strongly discouraged.

### Founder content

Assistants cite people, not just companies, and relevance beats reach. In the [Semrush LinkedIn study](https://www.semrush.com/blog/linkedin-ai-visibility-study/), the median cited post had 15 to 25 reactions. Publish what only you know: patterns from customer calls, benchmarks from your product, honest takes on your category's trade-offs. Use LinkedIn articles for depth, short posts for frequency and YouTube for product walkthroughs.

## What doesn't work, or isn't proven yet

- llms.txt. Jeremy Howard [proposed this plain-text guide for language models](https://llmstxt.org/) in 2024. [Google says](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/fundamentals/ai-optimization-guide) its Search doesn't use such files. [SE Ranking checked about 300,000 domains](https://seranking.com/blog/llms-txt/) and found the file made no measurable difference to citations. [Chrome's Lighthouse](https://developer.chrome.com/docs/lighthouse/agentic-browsing/llms-txt) now checks for one, outside its scores. Add it for your docs if it's cheap, and expect nothing from it.
- Special markup or rewrites. [Google says](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/fundamentals/ai-optimization-guide) its generative AI features require no structured data or special schema.org markup, and no chunking or rewriting for AI.
- Manufactured mentions and reviews. Google's guide says seeking inauthentic mentions "isn't as helpful as it might seem", since its AI features rely on its ranking and spam systems. Fake reviews also break the FTC rule.
- Prompt injection and hidden instructions. [Bing's 2026 guidelines](https://www.searchenginejournal.com/bing-adds-geo-to-official-guidelines-expands-ai-abuse-definitions/568442/) class attempts to interfere with the language models behind Bing and Copilot as abuse, along with content designed to trigger citations.
- Pages at scale. Google's [spam policies](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/essentials/spam-policies) treat generating many pages with AI tools without adding value as scaled content abuse.

## A 90-day plan with owners

1. Weeks 1 to 2, founder: write the prompt set. Pull 25 to 40 real buyer questions from sales calls, demos and support tickets, covering category ("best X for Y"), comparison ("X vs Y") and constraint prompts ("X for Salesforce users under $500 a month").
2. Weeks 1 to 2, product: let the search and user-fetch bots in the table through robots.txt and your CDN, and decide on training crawlers separately.
3. Weeks 2 to 3, marketer: set up measurement (next section) and take a baseline, running each prompt five times per assistant and logging whether you appear and which URLs are cited.
4. Weeks 3 to 6, product: make pricing, docs, integration and security pages public and server-rendered, then load each with JavaScript off to see what a crawler sees.
5. Weeks 3 to 6, marketer: rewrite the homepage and category pages in buyer language, with the same product name and category on your site, review profiles and LinkedIn page.
6. Weeks 5 to 8, marketer: publish fair comparison and alternatives pages for the matchups in your baseline, dated and updated when pricing changes.
7. Weeks 5 to 10, founder: contact the authors of the most-cited third-party lists and reviews with current facts, and ask for corrections where they're wrong.
8. Weeks 6 to 12, marketer: start a review program with customer success, asking at moments of success on the review site your answers cite most, with no reward tied to a rating.
9. Weeks 6 to 12, founder: publish under your own name every week, answering a buyer question with something only you know, and reply in community threads with your company named.
10. Week 13, marketer with founder and product: rerun the prompt set the same way, compare appearance rates and cited URLs with the baseline, check AI-referred signups, and set next quarter's priorities.

## How do you measure progress without fake precision?

Expect noise. In a [SparkToro study](https://sparktoro.com/blog/new-research-ais-are-highly-inconsistent-when-recommending-brands-or-products-marketers-should-take-care-when-tracking-ai-visibility/), 600 volunteers ran 12 prompts 2,961 times through ChatGPT, Claude and Google's AI. There was less than a 1 in 100 chance that two answers listed the same brands, and about 1 in 1,000 that they listed them in the same order. So ignore any tool's AI rank. Track appearance rate, the share of runs across your prompt set that mention you, per assistant, and treat small moves as noise.

In GA4, start with the AI Assistant channel Google added to the default channel group on [May 13, 2026](https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/9164320). It [sets the medium to ai-assistant](https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/9756891) when the referrer is on Google's list of assistants, but it misses traffic. [Search Engine Journal reported in July 2026](https://www.searchenginejournal.com/ga4s-ai-assistant-channel-undercounts-your-ai-traffic-how-to-build-one-that-doesnt/580133/) that one account's chatgpt.com sessions were split across AI Assistant, Referral and Unassigned, and that Perplexity wasn't listed. So also build a [custom channel group](https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/13051316): copy the default, add an AI assistants channel where source matches a regex like this one, and move it above Referral. It applies to past data too.

`.*(chatgpt|openai|perplexity|gemini\.google|copilot|claude\.ai|deepseek|grok).*`

[ChatGPT adds utm\_source=chatgpt.com](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/12627856-publishers-and-developers-faq) to its links, which makes it the easiest to spot. Clicks that arrive with no referrer or tag look like [direct visits](https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/9756891), so treat every number here as a floor.

For Google, Search Console's [Generative AI performance report](https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/16984139) shows impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, country and device, but no clicks or queries. Bing Webmaster Tools' [AI Performance report](https://blogs.bing.com/webmaster/February-2026/Introducing-AI-Performance-in-Bing-Webmaster-Tools-Public-Preview), launched in public preview in February 2026, shows citations in Copilot and Bing's AI summaries plus the grounding queries that pulled your pages.

Then ask buyers. A free-text "How did you hear about us" field on signup and demo forms catches people who heard your name from an assistant and typed your URL. Judge the work on signups and pipeline, not sessions. [Ahrefs reported in June 2025](https://ahrefs.com/blog/ai-search-traffic-conversions-ahrefs/) that AI search sent 0.5% of its visitors over 30 days but 12.1% of its signups. That's one company's data, not a benchmark.
