# Landing pages for paid traffic: a CRO checklist

A landing page that gets paid traffic has one job: keep the promise the ad made and make the next step easy. Five things matter most. The page says what the ad said. It loads fast on a phone. The first screen shows what you're selling and the one thing to do next. The full cost and the risk are clear before anyone commits. And the conversion is tracked well enough, consent included, that you can tell which page works.

Below is the checklist we use when we audit pages that get paid traffic, with notes where DTC and SaaS pages need different answers. You'll need your ad accounts, PageSpeed Insights, your analytics and a phone. Most teams can finish it in a day.

## Why the page affects what you pay for the click

On Google Search, the landing page feeds the auction. [Ad Rank](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/1722122?hl=en) uses auction-time quality signals, landing page experience among them, and Google says it looks at "the expectations users have about your landing page based on the clicked ad creative." Google also says [higher quality ads typically cost less per click](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/156066?hl=en). [Quality Score](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/6167118) is only a diagnostic and isn't used in the auction, but its landing page experience rating shows how your page compares with other advertisers' over the last 90 days.

Meta's [advertising standards](https://transparency.meta.com/policies/ad-standards/objectionable-content/low-quality-or-disruptive-experiences) say ads must not lead to landing pages "that provide an unexpected or disruptive experience." A page that breaks the ad's promise loses the sale on every platform, and on Google it also raises what you pay for the click.

## The landing page checklist

Each item is a yes or a no. Every no goes on the fix list.

![Wireframe of a product page annotated with five points: fast on a phone, product schema, price and stock in the HTML, one clear action, and shipping and returns up front.](https://roasexpert.com/hubfs/roas-expert-visuals/web-annotated-product-page.svg)

A product page that gets paid traffic, marked up with the checks that matter most.

### Message match

1. The headline repeats the ad's promise in the ad's words. Google's advice is to [keep messaging consistent from ad to landing page](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/6167130) and make sure the page follows through on the ad's offer.
2. Each ad group or ad set lands on the page that fits its intent. A product ad goes to that product with the advertised variant already selected. A SaaS ad about one use case goes to a page about that use case, not the homepage.
3. Any offer in the ad, such as a discount, a free shipping threshold or a trial length, shows on the first screen. For paid social, so does the product or scene from the creative.
4. Google [disapproves ads](https://support.google.com/adspolicy/answer/6368661) whose destination doesn't work, can't be crawled by AdsBot or sits on a different domain from the display URL. Check all three.
5. If you run [AI Max for Search](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/15910366), final URL expansion can send people to other pages it judges more relevant, and text customization tailors your headlines and descriptions. Check which pages get the clicks and what the ads now promise.

### Speed

Vodafone [ran an A/B test](https://web.dev/case-studies/vodafone) on a landing page fed by paid media and found that a 31% improvement in LCP led to 8% more sales.

1. Paste the exact landing URL into [PageSpeed Insights](https://developers.google.com/speed/docs/insights/v5/about) and read the mobile field data. It reports the 75th percentile of real visits over the previous 28 days, and the page passes when all three Core Web Vitals are good: [LCP of 2.5 seconds or less, INP of 200 milliseconds or less and CLS of 0.1 or less](https://web.dev/articles/vitals).
2. If you only see origin data, or nothing, check for noindex. Chrome's UX Report [leaves out pages](https://developer.chrome.com/docs/crux/methodology) served with a noindex tag or header, so a noindex paid page never gets field data there. Collect your own with Google's [web-vitals library](https://github.com/GoogleChrome/web-vitals), which measures real users the way Chrome does. On indexable pages, query strings are stripped, so visits with gclid or UTM tags count toward the clean URL.
3. Fix mobile LCP first. Google's [LCP guide](https://web.dev/articles/optimize-lcp) says to make the hero image discoverable in the HTML source, give it `fetchpriority="high"`, never lazy-load it and keep synchronous scripts out of the head. Then remove third-party tags nobody uses and load chat and review widgets after the first render.
4. In Meta Ads Manager, compare link clicks with landing page views for each ad set. Meta [counts the two separately](https://developers.facebook.com/docs/marketing-api/reference/ads-action-stats/), and its landing page views goal [optimizes for people](https://developers.facebook.com/docs/marketing-api/reference/ad-campaign) "most likely to click on and load your chosen landing page." A big gap usually means a slow page, a broken redirect or a pixel that fires late.

### The first screen

In Nielsen Norman Group's [2018 desktop eyetracking study](https://www.nngroup.com/articles/scrolling-and-attention/), people spent 57% of their viewing time above the fold. A phone shows far less, so plan the first screen for the phone.

1. The headline says what it is and who it's for, in the visitor's words.
2. DTC: product photo, price, star rating and add to cart are visible without scrolling on a common phone.
3. SaaS: one line on what the product does, a real screenshot or short clip of the interface and the main call to action. In [Baymard's SaaS research](https://baymard.com/research-articles/highlight-saas-ui), users wanted to see how a service looks in real life, and without that many hesitated to introduce it to coworkers.
4. There's one primary action. Swap the full menu for a slim header that links to shipping, returns, pricing or security. [Ad Rank](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/1722122?hl=en) also weighs how easy the landing page is to get around, so don't build a dead end.
5. No pop-up covers the first screen. Paid visitors came for the thing in the ad, so ask for the email after they've seen it.

### Proof

1. DTC: the star rating and review count sit next to the price and link to the reviews. Northwestern's [Spiegel Research Center](https://spiegel.medill.northwestern.edu/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2021/04/Spiegel_Online-Review_eBook_Jun2017_FINAL.pdf) analyzed a year of data from one high-end gift retailer and found the purchase likelihood for a product with five reviews was 270% greater than for one with none.
2. DTC: don't hide imperfect ratings. The same report found purchase likelihood usually peaks at ratings between 4.0 and 4.7 and falls as ratings approach 5.0.
3. SaaS: logos and case studies come from the visitor's segment, with a named person, a role and a result. A line like "trusted by thousands of teams" doesn't count.
4. SaaS selling to larger companies: security and compliance details (SOC 2, GDPR terms, data location) are one click from the form.

### Offer and risk reversal

1. DTC: the product page shows the shipping cost or free shipping threshold and a delivery date. When [Baymard asked US online shoppers](https://baymard.com/lists/cart-abandonment-rate) why they abandoned a checkout, 40% said extra costs such as shipping, tax and fees were too high, and 20% said delivery was too slow. In Baymard's [product page benchmark](https://baymard.com/blog/current-state-ecommerce-product-page-ux), 67% of sites don't give a total cost estimate near the buy section.
2. DTC: a one-line returns summary sits next to add to cart and links to the full policy. In the same benchmark, 44% of sites don't show or link to the return policy from the main product page content.
3. SaaS: the page says what happens after the click: trial length, whether a card is needed, how long the demo takes and who runs it. Show pricing or a starting price if you can. Our post on [pricing an AI product](https://roasexpert.com/blog/pricing-an-ai-product) covers that side.
4. SaaS: name your risk reversal next to the button. Usually that's a free trial, monthly billing you can cancel or a pilot with clear exit terms.

### Form or add to cart

1. DTC: add to cart stays reachable on mobile, and sizes are picked with buttons, not a dropdown. Baymard's guideline heading notes that [57% of sites don't](https://baymard.com/blog/current-state-ecommerce-product-page-ux).
2. DTC: guest checkout is the default and express wallets sit at the top of checkout. In [Baymard's survey](https://baymard.com/lists/cart-abandonment-rate), 18% of shoppers who abandoned a checkout did so because the site wanted them to create an account.
3. DTC: checkout asks only for what you need to ship and charge. The average checkout in Baymard's 2024 benchmark had [11.3 form fields](https://baymard.com/research-articles/checkout-flow-average-form-fields), and Baymard says most sites need only 8.
4. SaaS: the demo form asks only what sales needs to route the lead, usually work email, company and one qualifying question. Enrich the rest after submit. There's no magic field count, so judge each field by what sales does with it.
5. SaaS: a calendar appears right after submit, so the meeting gets booked on the spot. For self-serve sign-up, offer Google or Microsoft sign-in and leave out anything the product can ask for later.

### Tracking

1. One conversion counts. For DTC it's a purchase with its value. For SaaS it's a qualified demo or an activated trial imported from your CRM, not a form fill. Our post on [ROAS, MER and POAS](https://roasexpert.com/blog/roas-mer-poas) covers judging spend on margin.
2. Click IDs survive every redirect. Google says the [GCLID must reach the final landing page](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/3095550) for conversions to track, and Meta says its [click ID is case-sensitive](https://developers.facebook.com/docs/marketing-api/conversions-api/parameters/fbp-and-fbc) and shouldn't be modified. Click your own ad and check the parameters are still in the URL when the page loads.
3. In the EEA, the UK and Switzerland, the consent banner feeds Google's consent mode. Google [requires consent in those regions](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/16142339?hl=en) and says advertisers must [collect consent and share consent signals](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/13695607?hl=en) to keep using its tags for measurement, ad personalization and remarketing for EEA users. Set `ad_user_data` and `ad_personalization`, not just `ad_storage` and `analytics_storage`.
4. Choose basic or advanced consent mode on purpose. [Basic mode](https://developers.google.com/tag-platform/security/concepts/consent-mode) blocks Google tags until the visitor chooses. Advanced mode loads them with consent denied by default and sends measurements without cookies, which lets Google build an advertiser-specific conversion model instead of a general one. Get legal sign-off either way, and wire the same banner to the Meta Pixel's [consent calls](https://developers.facebook.com/docs/meta-pixel/implementation/gdpr), `fbq('consent', 'revoke')` and `fbq('consent', 'grant')`.
5. Send server-side events too. Meta [recommends the Conversions API alongside the Pixel](https://developers.facebook.com/docs/marketing-api/conversions-api/deduplicate-pixel-and-server-events) and deduplicates the two when the event name and the Pixel's `eventID` match the server's `event_name` and `event_id` within 48 hours. On Google, turn on [enhanced conversions](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/9888656), which sends hashed first-party data such as email addresses. Google says it's [merging the web and leads versions into one on/off setting](https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/16884284?hl=en), scheduled for June 2026, and from April 2026 accepts this data from website tags, Data Manager and the API at once. Server-side events still need consent where it's required.

### Testing

1. Fix what's broken before you test. A test on a page that drops click IDs or takes five seconds to load measures the bug.
2. Work out the sample size before you start. As an illustration, a page converting paid traffic at 3% and looking for a 20% relative lift (to 3.6%), at 5% significance and 80% power, needs about 14,000 visitors per variation by the standard two-proportion formula. That's 28,000 visitors in total, or about four weeks at 1,000 paid visitors a day. Run your own numbers in [Evan Miller's sample size calculator](https://www.evanmiller.org/ab-testing/sample-size.html).
3. On a low-traffic page, run one test at a time. Split the traffic across three tests and each one takes three times as long. Overlap them and the changes interact, so you can't tell which one moved the number. Three independent tests with no real effect, each judged at 5% significance, also have about a 14% chance of producing at least one false winner.
4. Don't stop when the dashboard turns green. In [Evan Miller's worked example](https://www.evanmiller.org/how-not-to-run-an-ab-test.html), checking for significance after every observation and stopping at the first significant result gave a false positive 26.1% of the time, not 5%.
5. Test big changes first: the offer, the headline, the first screen, the form. Run tests in whole weeks. On SaaS pages, judge tests on booked meetings, then check the winner against qualified pipeline a few weeks later.

## Where DTC and SaaS pages differ

| Area | DTC product or landing page | SaaS demo or sign-up page |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Main action | Add to cart, then a short checkout | Book a demo or start a trial |
| First screen | Product photo, price, rating, add to cart | What it does, product UI, one call to action |
| Proof | Rating, review count, photo reviews | Logos and case studies from the same segment |
| Cost and risk | Shipping cost, delivery date, returns | Pricing, trial terms, what happens next |
| Form | Guest checkout, express wallets, fewer fields | Few fields, calendar right after submit |
| Conversion to track | Purchase with value | Qualified demo or activated trial from the CRM |
| Test metric | Conversion rate and revenue per visitor | Booked meetings, checked against pipeline |

## What we'd fix first

If you only have a day, work in this order.

1. Tracking: lost click IDs, missing consent signals, missing or doubled conversions. Every later fix gets judged on these numbers.
2. Message match on the ad groups and ad sets that spend the most. Often it's just a different final URL.
3. Mobile LCP on those same pages.
4. Hidden cost and risk: shipping and returns for DTC, pricing and next steps for SaaS.
5. Checkout and form friction: forced accounts, extra fields, no booking step.
6. Proof next to the decision.
7. Testing, one change per page at a time.

## If you want help

Our [growth audit](https://roasexpert.com/growth-marketing) costs $1,000, and it's where we'd run this checklist against your ad accounts and landing pages. If the pages need rebuilding, [web development](https://roasexpert.com/web-development) builds start at $4,000, and care and CRO runs $750 to $1,500 a month. [Book a 30-minute call](https://roasexpert.com/contact) to talk it through.
