# Reddit Ads for SaaS, developer tools and AI products: a 30-day test

Reddit Ads can work for SaaS, developer tools and AI products if you set them up for how Reddit's targeting works. Target by community and keyword, write the way your buyers talk to each other, answer the comments, and judge results on click-tracked signups, not on Reddit's default report, which counts view-throughs. Start with a 30-day test of three ad groups at $50 a day each, the minimum [Reddit's setup guide](https://business.reddithelp.com/articles/Knowledge/Set-up-a-Reddit-Ads-Campaign) recommends.

One detail changes how you write every ad. Reddit says community-targeted ads [can show anywhere those people browse](https://business.reddithelp.com/articles/Knowledge/reddit-audiences), not only in the subreddits you picked. An ad aimed at a Kubernetes community may land in a member's home feed, far from any Kubernetes thread, so it has to make sense there.

## What can you buy on Reddit in October 2026?

Reddit lists a commitment of $10,000 or more a quarter among the criteria for its [managed sales team](https://business.reddithelp.com/articles/Knowledge/How-to-purchase-Reddit-Ads), but you can buy auction ads yourself in Ads Manager. Your [campaign objective](https://business.reddithelp.com/articles/Knowledge/Ad-campaign-objectives) decides what Reddit optimizes for and what you pay for.

| Objective | Optimizes for | You pay |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Awareness and consideration | Impressions or video views | CPM or CPV |
| Traffic | Clicks or page visits | CPC |
| Sales | Purchase, SignUp, Lead and other events | oCPM or CPC |
| Lead generation (beta) | Lead, SignUp or clicks | CPC |
| App promotion | Installs and in-app events | oCPM or CPC |

Formats are image, video, carousel and free-form. Per Reddit's [ad specs](https://business.reddithelp.com/articles/Knowledge/Reddit-Ad-Unit-Specifications), a free-form ad holds up to 20 images, five videos and 40,000 characters of rich text, so it reads like a long post. That suits technical products, but [free-form ads](https://business.reddithelp.com/articles/Knowledge/Free-form-Ads) run only on the Traffic and Awareness and consideration objectives.

### Placements: feed and conversation

Reddit's [Standard campaign setup](https://business.reddithelp.com/articles/Knowledge/Set-up-a-Reddit-Ads-Campaign) offers two placements. Feed ads appear in the Home, Popular and community feeds. Conversation ads sit on comment pages, between the post and the first comment. Pick one, both, or auto placements. For developer tools, run both. The conversation placement reaches people reading threads, which is where tool recommendations get swapped.

### Targeting: communities, keywords and interests

Reddit's [targeting overview](https://business.reddithelp.com/articles/Knowledge/Overview-Reddit-Ads-Audience-and-Targeting) lists three Reddit audiences.

- Community targeting reaches people who subscribed to, viewed or visited your chosen subreddits in the last 28 days. Reddit [suggests at least 15 communities](https://business.reddithelp.com/articles/Knowledge/reddit-audiences) per ad group, and not every community is approved to serve ads.
- Keyword targeting takes English keywords, reads their context and places ads where they're most relevant. Negative keywords let you exclude topics.
- Interest targeting uses topics people recently interacted with, such as Business and Finance. Reddit suggests starting here, but that's broad for a niche product.

Reddit recommends automated targeting, which adds related keywords, communities and interests, but says you can keep it off if your budget is limited or you want precise targeting. Keep it off for a first test so you can see which audience worked.

Custom audiences have floors that matter for young companies. Per Reddit's [custom audiences](https://business.reddithelp.com/articles/Knowledge/custom-audiences) page, a customer list needs 1,000 matched users, and a lookalike needs a seed of 1,000 matched customers or 10,000 site visitors, plus automated targeting. Engagement retargeting reaches people who interacted with your ads in the last six months. There's no job title or company targeting, so if you sell to a role rather than a technical community, read our guide to [LinkedIn Ads for SaaS](https://roasexpert.com/blog/linkedin-ads-for-saas) too.

### Lead gen ads now send people to your site

Reddit's [Lead generation objective](https://business.reddithelp.com/articles/Knowledge/about-lead-generation-ads), still labeled beta, drives people "to a form on your website" and optimizes for Lead or SignUp events, or for clicks if you have no pixel or Conversions API. That's not what launched in 2024. [Search Engine Land reported](https://searchengineland.com/reddit-lead-generation-ads-444426) that the July 2024 public beta collected details on Reddit, with email fields filled in automatically. Today's help article describes website forms only, so ask a Reddit rep about on-Reddit forms before you plan around them.

### Max campaigns and Redditor Highlights

[Max campaigns](https://business.reddithelp.com/articles/Knowledge/max-campaigns), still labeled beta, automate bids, budget, creative, targeting and placements for the Traffic, Sales and App promotion objectives, using only image and video ads. [Redditor Highlights](https://business.reddithelp.com/articles/Knowledge/redditor-highlights) add three to five positive posts from real users and an AI summary to eligible feed ads. They're on by default in Standard and Max campaigns, except in regulated or sensitive verticals, and need at least three suitable English posts. Start with a Standard campaign, where you can see what worked.

## Reddit Pro and the insight tools

[Reddit Pro](https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/24368510335892-What-is-Reddit-Pro) is "a free suite of organic business tools", in beta for eligible businesses in English-speaking countries, and Reddit says it isn't an ads tool. To [qualify](https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/24387985254292-Eligibility-requirements) you need a safe-for-work account with a verified email and basic business details. Two features may help a SaaS team.

- [Trends](https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/47619216411284-Reddit-Pro-Feature-Trends) monitors keywords and shows top posts and comments, AI summaries by theme and the communities talking, plus conversation volume for some keywords. It covers English conversations in public, safe-for-work communities.
- [Links](https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/47619289307412-Reddit-Pro-Feature-Links) shows where links to your domain are shared, with views, clicks, upvotes and comments. It's for publishers, needs domain verification and is desktop only.

Pro also covers [profile posts, scheduling and AMAs](https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/24389311835028-Reddit-Pro-Feature-Profile), and can [promote a profile post with one button](https://business.reddithelp.com/articles/Knowledge/Reddit-Pro). [Promoted posts](https://business.reddithelp.com/articles/Knowledge/Promote-Your-Post) use the Traffic objective, bill per click, "can't use targeting" and must use daily budgets, so they suit a launch post, not a test.

In Ads Manager, [audience insights](https://business.reddithelp.com/articles/Knowledge/the-dashboard) show the top interests and communities of the people you reached. Reddit advises against narrowing your audience on them, so test them in a new ad group instead. The [Ads Inspiration Library](https://business.reddithelp.com/articles/Knowledge/ads-inspiration-library) shows the most successful active ads from the past year to anyone with an Ads account. Reddit also announced Reddit Insights, a social listening tool, at Cannes Lions in June 2025, [Axios reported](https://www.axios.com/2025/06/16/reddit-ai-community-intelligence). I couldn't find it in Reddit's ads help center, so ask a rep before counting on it.

## How do you track conversions from Reddit?

Install both the pixel and the Conversions API. Reddit warns that the [Reddit Pixel's](https://business.reddithelp.com/articles/Knowledge/reddit-pixel) coverage may be limited by signal loss that affects browser-based tools. The [Conversions API](https://business.reddithelp.com/articles/Knowledge/Conversions-API) sends events from your server. Reddit recommends both, requires deduplication when you run both, and keeps whichever copy of an event carries more metadata and match keys. Send IP address, click ID, email and user agent where you can, and send each event within seven days.

Reddit's [standard events](https://business.reddithelp.com/articles/Knowledge/supported-conversion-events) include SignUp, Lead and Purchase. For SaaS, map SignUp to account creation, Lead to a demo request, and Purchase to the first payment, sent from your billing system. Optimize for the deepest event you'll get often enough, which in most first tests is SignUp.

### Judge results honestly

Reddit's [default attribution](https://business.reddithelp.com/articles/Knowledge/Web-Attribution-Overview) counts a conversion if someone clicks your ad and converts within 28 days, or sees it and converts within one day. You can set each window to 1, 7 or 28 days in Events Manager. A developer who scrolled past your ad and signed up a few hours later from a Google search counts as a Reddit conversion by default.

So use three numbers. Reddit's report is the ceiling. Signups carrying your Reddit UTM tags in your CRM are the floor. A free-text "How did you hear about us" field on signup and demo forms is the tiebreaker. Judge the test on cost per qualified signup from the floor. If the floor pays back, scale. If only the ceiling does, run a holdout before spending more. Our guide to [ROAS, MER and POAS](https://roasexpert.com/blog/roas-mer-poas) covers incrementality tests.

## How do you write ads that fit a community?

Reddit's [creative best practices](https://business.reddithelp.com/articles/Knowledge/Creative-Best-Practices) say redditors "don't like 'sneaky' ads". Reddit suggests speaking the way redditors talk to each other, naming your brand, stating clear prices and backing claims with stats or specs. For technical buyers, go further.

- Name the job or the problem, not the subreddit. Community-targeted ads can appear anywhere, so "Hey r/devops" reads wrong on a home feed.
- Show the product working: a terminal command and its output, a config file or a short screen recording.
- Answer the obvious questions up front: price, free tier limits, license, self-hosting and security status.
- For AI products, show a real output, say what it gets wrong, and say whether you train on customer data. Someone will ask.
- Write as a person. For example: "We kept rebuilding preview environments by hand, so we wrote a CLI that spins one up for every pull request."
- Save free-form ads for depth, like a benchmark with its method.

## How should you handle comments on your ads?

Comments are optional. Reddit's [setup guide](https://business.reddithelp.com/articles/Knowledge/Set-up-a-Reddit-Ads-Campaign) lists "allow comments" as a setting on each ad. Turn it on to see objections in people's own words.

- Give one person ownership, ideally a founder or engineer, and have them check twice a day during the test.
- Reply openly as the company, say who's answering, and link the doc that backs up the answer.
- Admit limits. Correct a factual error once, then leave it.
- Never reply from personal accounts posing as users or ask colleagues to upvote. Reddit's [manipulated content](https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/41180423371156-Manipulated-Content-and-Misleading-Behavior) and [disrupting communities](https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/360043066412-Disrupting-Communities) policies ban deceptive interactions and vote manipulation.
- Turn repeated objections into next week's headlines. If an ad draws mostly hostile replies, pause it and fix the message.

## What budget and bids does Reddit require?

Reddit's [budgets and bidding](https://business.reddithelp.com/articles/Knowledge/How-much-do-Reddit-Ads-cost) article doesn't publish a minimum budget or bid. The nearest thing is a tip in its [setup guide](https://business.reddithelp.com/articles/Knowledge/Set-up-a-Reddit-Ads-Campaign): "Each ad group should have a daily budget of at least $50." Budgets sit on the ad group, daily or lifetime, with an optional campaign spend cap that Reddit never bills past. An ad group may overspend its budget by up to 20%, because delivery runs on live auctions.

For bidding, start with lowest cost, which gets as many results as possible for your budget. Once you know your real cost per signup, test cost cap, which may not spend your whole budget. Reddit's pages are unclear on whether it caps cost per action or per click. Manual bidding sets one bid for every auction, and Reddit recommends automated bidding where it's available.

To size a test, say you run three ad groups at $50 a day. That's $4,500 over 30 days. If a qualified signup is worth $150 to you at breakeven, you need 30 traceable qualified signups just to break even. That's an illustration, not a benchmark.

## The organic side: Reddit's rules for businesses

Reddit's [spam policy](https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/360043504051-Spam) says that if your contributions are mostly links to a business you run or benefit from, you should "be thoughtful about the frequency of posting" or "consider advertising opportunities using our self-serve platform". It says "community moderators adjudicate what constitutes unwanted/spammy content", and it bans mass-posting repetitive content for exposure or financial gain, and using bots or generative AI tools that facilitate spam. [Reddiquette](https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/205926439-Reddiquette), which Reddit calls an informal expression of redditors' values, suggests only 1 in 10 of your submissions be your own content.

Have founders and engineers answer questions under their own names, say they work on the product, and link it only when it answers the question. Use the Pro profile for launches, changelogs and AMAs.

Assistants cite Reddit threads too, as our [AI visibility guide for SaaS and AI startups](https://roasexpert.com/blog/ai-visibility-for-saas-and-ai-startups) explains, but that share swings. [Semrush tracked 230,000 prompts](https://www.semrush.com/blog/most-cited-domains-ai/) from July to October 2025 and saw ChatGPT cite Reddit in close to 60% of responses in early August and around 10% by mid-September. Don't buy ads expecting AI citations.

## A test plan with 30 live days

1. Days 1 to 3, engineer: install the pixel and Conversions API with deduplication, send SignUp, Lead and Purchase, and confirm they arrive in Events Manager.
2. Days 1 to 3, marketer: tag every ad URL with UTMs, make sure your CRM keeps them, and add a "How did you hear about us" field to signup and demo forms.
3. Days 1 to 5, marketer: track 10 to 20 keywords in Reddit Pro Trends, then pick 15 or more communities and a keyword list from the threads your buyers start.
4. Days 4 to 6, founder: write three angles in your own voice, each answering a real thread, as image or video ads, plus one free-form post if you have a technical story.
5. Day 7, marketer: write down your breakeven cost per qualified signup. Launch a Standard campaign with three ad groups at $50 a day: communities, keywords, and interests. Use lowest cost bidding, both placements, comments on and automated targeting off.
6. Days 7 to 36, founder: answer comments twice a day and log every objection.
7. Day 14, marketer: replace the weakest creative in each ad group with one that answers the most common objection.
8. Day 21, marketer: shift budget to the ad group with the lowest cost per UTM-tracked qualified signup, and test a cost cap.
9. Day 37, marketer and founder: compare Reddit's numbers, UTM-tracked signups and self-reported answers, then scale, rework or stop based on the floor against your breakeven.
