# Shopify Agentic Storefronts: what's on by default and what to check

Agentic Storefronts is on by default for every eligible Shopify store. Shopify shares your products with ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Meta and its own Shop app through Shopify Catalog, Google AI Mode and Gemini read them from Merchant Center, and checkout inside Copilot, Meta and, as it rolls out, Google is on by default for stores that qualify. Qualifying is mostly about markets: ChatGPT and Copilot need you to sell to US customers, Google also needs a US-based store, and Meta covers the US, Canada and Mexico.

So the work isn't switching anything on. It's choosing which defaults suit you, fixing the product data Shopify scores, and knowing that GA4 won't see orders placed in those in-chat checkouts. And although some Shopify pages mention Perplexity, it isn't a channel you can manage in your admin.

## What has Shopify launched for selling through AI assistants?

Agentic Storefronts is the control layer. Shopify [introduced it](https://www.shopify.com/news/winter-26-edition-renaissance) on December 10, 2025, [said](https://www.shopify.com/news/agentic-commerce-momentum) in March 2026 that products "become discoverable in ChatGPT by default," and on May 11 [gave it its own page](https://changelog.shopify.com/posts/a-new-home-for-agentic-storefronts-in-your-admin) under Sales channels, then Agentic.

Shopify Catalog is the data layer, a product dataset that "Shop, select AI platforms, shopping sites, and AI agents" can search. Eligible products go in automatically, and the [Help Center](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/shopify-catalog) is blunt: "You can't opt out of Shopify Catalog itself."

The Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) is the open standard for agentic commerce. Google [announced it](https://blog.google/products/ads-commerce/agentic-commerce-ai-tools-protocol-retailers-platforms/) on January 11, 2026, co-developed with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target and Walmart, and Shopify says shopping in [Copilot](https://www.shopify.com/editions/spring2026) and in [AI Mode and Gemini](https://www.shopify.com/news/agentic-commerce-momentum) runs on it. Its [Spring '26 Edition](https://www.shopify.com/news/spring-26-edition-merchant) says "Shopify merchants are UCP-enabled by default." Since [September 4](https://shopify.dev/changelog/posts/08-25-is-now-supported), storefronts declare UCP version 2026-08-25 at `/.well-known/ucp`, with nothing for you to change.

The Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) is OpenAI's, built with Stripe. OpenAI [launched it](https://openai.com/index/buy-it-in-chatgpt/) with Instant Checkout in September 2025 and said Shopify merchants were "coming soon," then [stepped back](https://openai.com/index/powering-product-discovery-in-chatgpt/) from Instant Checkout in March 2026. Its [merchant page](https://chatgpt.com/merchants) now says Shopify catalogs are "already integrated." There's no ACP feed for you to build. ChatGPT reads Shopify Catalog and sends buyers to your checkout.

Browser agents are the newest piece. Since [August 5](https://shopify.dev/changelog/posts/webmcp-liquid-hydrogen), Liquid storefronts expose WebMCP tools that an agent in the shopper's browser can call to search products and manage the cart. Since [September 28](https://shopify.dev/changelog/posts/webmcp-support-for-checkout), they can also update checkout and submit it "after buyer confirmation." There's nothing to configure.

## Which AI channels are live?

| Channel | Who qualifies | Checkout | Status |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| ChatGPT | Stores selling to US customers, based anywhere | Your own checkout, in ChatGPT's in-app browser or a new tab | Live |
| Microsoft Copilot | Stores selling to US customers | Direct checkout in Copilot, shown to US shoppers | Live |
| Google AI Mode and Gemini | US-based stores selling to US customers, with Merchant Center | Direct checkout, shown to US shoppers | Rolling out |
| Meta | Stores selling to the US, Canada or Mexico | Direct checkout on Meta surfaces | Added September 8, 2026 |
| Perplexity | No setting in Shopify | PayPal Instant Buy | Not a managed channel |

Those rules come from Shopify's pages for [ChatGPT](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-sales-channels/agentic-storefronts/chatgpt), [Copilot](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-sales-channels/agentic-storefronts/microsoft), [Google AI Mode and Gemini](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-sales-channels/agentic-storefronts/google), and [Meta](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-sales-channels/agentic-storefronts/meta). Meta [joined the admin](https://changelog.shopify.com/posts/meta-is-now-an-ai-channel-in-your-admin) with products shared by default. Shop is a channel too, and Other channels covers independent developers and new partners testing Catalog.

Perplexity is the confusing one. The [Winter '26 Edition](https://www.shopify.com/editions/winter2026) said products were "discoverable right in ChatGPT, Copilot, and Perplexity," and the [Agentic plan page](https://www.shopify.com/agentic-plan) still names it, but the Help Center's list of agentic storefront channels doesn't, and there's no Perplexity setting. Shopify's [April blog](https://www.shopify.com/blog/perplexity-shopping) says your product data can sync with Perplexity "through Shopify's infrastructure" and that Perplexity checks out through PayPal's Instant Buy, so those orders are "managed through PayPal rather than your Shopify admin."

## What's on by default, and for whom?

The default setting, per Shopify's [Managing agentic storefronts](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-sales-channels/agentic-storefronts/agentic-home) page, is Allow Shopify to manage for me. With it on, channels get your products through Catalog, direct checkout is on wherever a channel offers it, and you're enrolled in new channels automatically. Microsoft [said in January](https://about.ads.microsoft.com/en/blog/post/january-2026/conversations-that-convert-copilot-checkout-and-brand-agents) that Shopify merchants would be "automatically enrolled following an opt-out window" for Copilot Checkout.

Every store also [serves](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-sales-channels/agentic-storefronts/products) `/agents.md`, `/llms.txt` and `/llms-full.txt` with your store name, URL, sitemap, policies and discovery endpoints, no app needed.

The [Catalog requirements](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/shopify-catalog/requirements) decide eligibility:

- Starter plan or higher, not in private mode, and in good standing on Shopify's account, activity and policy checks.
- A title, at least one image and a price above zero.
- Published to your online store, Hydrogen or Headless channel with an identifiable product URL.
- Not Unlisted, not hidden from search engines, and not sensitive content such as mature content.

Each channel also needs the Shopify Agentic Storefronts Supplemental Terms of Service accepted and your Terms of service, Privacy policy, and Return and refund policy completed in Settings, then Policies.

Shopify excludes B2B-only products it can identify, such as those published only to B2B markets or behind a login or password. The direct checkouts don't take subscriptions, product bundles or customizable products, and ChatGPT hides anything on OpenAI's prohibited list. Brands without a Shopify online store can join through the [Agentic plan](https://www.shopify.com/agentic-plan), which has no monthly fee and [keeps direct checkout off](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-sales-channels/agentic-storefronts/agentic-plan-setup) until you opt in.

## Which admin settings should you check?

In Sales channels, then Agentic, these are Shopify's names:

- Allow Shopify to manage for me. On by default, and you have to turn it off to change anything below.
- Shopify Catalog access. A global switch plus one each for ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Meta and Other channels.
- Auto enroll new storefronts. Whether new channels, including their direct checkout, start without asking you.
- Direct checkout. One each for Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode and Gemini, and Meta. ChatGPT has none.
- Review product data mapping, in the Sources section under Shopify Catalog.

Elsewhere, check Settings, then Policies, and the Google & YouTube channel, where Shopify wants Automatically sync products and Automatically sync shipping information on if you use it. Meta's page requires the Facebook and Instagram by Meta channel for products in shoppable ads.

Direct checkout needs a real decision. In Copilot and Google, buyers tap Buy, then Pay now, without visiting your store. On Meta, a buyer whose checkout needs details Meta can't collect moves to your own checkout in Meta's in-app browser, cart intact. In Copilot and Google, Shopify loads "only the checkout blocks that are essential to completing checkout," so custom fields, upsells and validations might not display, and Meta's checkout supports no checkout blocks. All three drop local delivery and pickup, don't let you require sign-in, and offer only some accelerated checkout options, though discount codes and Shopify Functions still run. If your checkout depends on any of that, test it or switch direct checkout off.

## Which product data matters most?

Shopify shows you what it scores. The search preview on the Agentic page runs a query against Catalog, suggests queries under Top search queries and Queries where your products appeared, and rates each listing on five indicators:

- Description completeness: description word count.
- Image coverage: number of product images.
- Product reviews: average rating and review count, from reviews "verified by trusted sources."
- Variant & option completeness: variants, options and their stock.
- Shop policy completeness: whether shipping, returns, refund and other policies exist.

If your products miss the top 10 for a query, the tool shows your most relevant ones, and the Improve your listing section suggests fixes. Start there, but Shopify says channels often re-rank results, so the preview is directional.

Shopify's [optimization guide](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/shopify-catalog/optimizing-products) also lists Type, Vendor, Collections, Tags, Barcode (ISBN, UPC, GTIN, etc.) and variant option names among the fields to fill. Do these first:

- Put legal disclosures in the first 6,000 characters of each description, as the ChatGPT, Copilot and Google pages ask.
- Fill Barcode with real GTINs. Google [says](https://support.google.com/merchants/answer/6324461?hl=en) products with missing or incorrect GTINs "may have limited visibility," and that you shouldn't guess.
- Use [Review product data mapping](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/shopify-catalog/mapping) to send Catalog a fuller title, description or category from a metafield or metaobject, without changing your store.
- Use Custom combined listings to show variants that live as separate products as one Catalog listing.

For Google, keep shipping synced and set returns in Merchant Center. Google's [UCP guide](https://developers.google.com/merchant/ucp/guides/merchant-center) says return policies "will be referenced on the checkout screen" and asks for a customer service contact. The [Knowledge Base app](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/promoting-marketing/knowledge-base) lets you edit the facts and FAQs AI platforms use about your store, though Shopify says it "doesn't affect how often your store appears in AI platform results."

Assistants also crawl your pages. Our guides to [what AI assistants need from your store](https://roasexpert.com/blog/agentic-commerce-what-ai-assistants-need-from-your-store), [product feeds for AI shopping](https://roasexpert.com/blog/product-feeds-for-ai-shopping) and [GEO for ecommerce](https://roasexpert.com/blog/geo-for-ecommerce) cover that side.

## How do orders and attribution show up?

Shopify [says](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-sales-channels/agentic-storefronts) AI channel orders appear in your admin "with channel or referrer attribution." Direct checkout orders carry the channel, and [Meta's page](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-sales-channels/agentic-storefronts/meta) says they're "attributed to Meta" like any other sales channel. ChatGPT is a referrer, because buyers use your own checkout, and OpenAI [adds](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/12627856-publishers-and-developers-faq) `utm_source=chatgpt.com` to its links.

The Agentic page reports Sales, Orders, Online store sessions and Online store conversion per channel, though not yet for headless stores. Online store conversion only counts visits that reached your store.

The gap is in analytics. Google Analytics and custom pixels don't fire in the [Copilot](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-sales-channels/agentic-storefronts/microsoft), [Google](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-sales-channels/agentic-storefronts/google) or [Meta](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-sales-channels/agentic-storefronts/meta) direct checkouts, so GA4 and pixel-based reports miss those sales. Use Shopify orders by sales channel as the record. For visits that do reach your site, see our post on [AI assistant traffic in GA4](https://roasexpert.com/blog/ai-assistant-traffic-in-ga4).

On direct checkout orders the channel sees the customer's name, email, phone number and address, Shopify's [privacy page](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-sales-channels/agentic-storefronts/data-privacy) says, but not your order history or customer database. Shopify says you keep "full ownership of the customer relationship," and Microsoft says you stay merchant of record in Copilot.

## How do you opt out or exclude products?

You can't leave Shopify Catalog, but you can stop third-party channels reading it. Shop still shows your products. In Sales channels, then Agentic, turn off Allow Shopify to manage for me, click the channel, turn off Shopify Catalog access and click Save. Shopify says data can take up to 7 days to stop flowing. To approve future channels yourself, turn off Auto enroll new storefronts.

Google is different. Discovery runs on Merchant Center, so switching off its Direct checkout only sends buyers to your store to pay. Your products stay in Google's AI results unless you change what Merchant Center receives.

Single products are harder. Shopify's documented options, Unlisted status or the `seo.hidden` metafield, hide the product from every agentic channel, Shop included, and from search engines. Shopify doesn't document a way to stay in Google Search but out of AI channels, and blocking AI crawlers in `robots.txt.liquid` only affects open-web discovery, not what Catalog sends.

## What's still rolling out?

- Google AI Mode and Gemini "is rolling out to eligible stores," and its direct checkout "might not yet be available in your store," [Shopify says](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-sales-channels/agentic-storefronts/google).
- Meta's direct checkout covers Meta surfaces "including Muse when available," with Shop Pay in Muse [when available](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-sales-channels/agentic-storefronts/meta).
- OpenAI [says](https://chatgpt.com/merchants) ChatGPT shopping is live for US users, with more regions and a self-serve merchant platform planned.
- WebMCP agents work only in Chromium-based browsers, through an [origin trial](https://shopify.dev/changelog/posts/webmcp-liquid-hydrogen).

If you don't sell to customers in the US, Canada or Mexico, none of the four named channels are open to you yet. Assistants still crawl your site, so page-level work still pays.

## A checklist you can finish in one sitting

This is the same first pass we run in an [Agentic SEO audit](https://roasexpert.com/agentic-seo).

1. Open Sales channels, then Agentic, and note which channels are on.
2. Confirm you qualify: Starter plan or higher, not in private mode, and selling into each channel's markets.
3. Complete Terms of service, Privacy policy, Return and refund policy and a shipping policy in Settings, then Policies.
4. Decide on Direct checkout per channel. If you rely on pickup, local delivery, required sign-in, checkout blocks or subscriptions, test it or switch it off.
5. Decide on Auto enroll new storefronts. Turn it off if you want to approve each new channel and its direct checkout.
6. Confirm the Google & YouTube channel syncs products and shipping, and that Merchant Center has your return policy and a support contact.
7. Run five real customer queries in the search preview and note which products rank.
8. Fix the quality indicators on your best sellers first: descriptions, images, variants and stock, and verified reviews.
9. Add real GTINs to Barcode and move legal disclosures into the first 6,000 characters.
10. Use Review product data mapping where titles or descriptions are thin.
11. Open `/agents.md` on your domain and fix it with an `agents.md.liquid` template if it's thin.
12. Note this month's Sales and Orders by channel, and judge each channel on Shopify orders, not GA4.

## If you want help

Our [Agentic SEO audit](https://roasexpert.com/agentic-seo) costs $1,500 and takes two to three weeks. We go through your Agentic settings, Catalog eligibility, product data, policies and attribution, plus the crawling and feed work outside Shopify, and give you the fixes in priority order. [Book a 30-minute call](https://roasexpert.com/contact) if you'd like to talk it through first.
