Agentic SEO for Shopify: the work Shopify leaves to you.
Shopify already shares eligible products with ChatGPT, Copilot and Meta, and handles your sitemap and canonical tags. It won’t add GTINs, fix an app that hides reviews or clear out old crawler rules. We do that work, so AI assistants read the store your customers see.
Starts with a $1,500 audit over 2 to 3 weeks.
What Shopify handles for you, and what it doesn’t
Checked against Shopify’s documentation and its Dawn and Horizon themes on 6 October 2026.
| Area | Shopify handles | Left to you |
|---|---|---|
| Crawling | A default robots.txt that blocks cart, checkout, sort and multi-filter URLs and lets AI crawlers in | Old robots.txt.liquid rules that still block /policies/ and /search |
| Indexing | A sitemap.xml, canonical tags, and hreflang for markets with their own URLs | Copy on collections, and rules for tag and filter URLs |
| Product markup | Name, brand, image, price and stock, in Shopify’s own themes | Ratings, shipping and returns |
| AI channels | Agentic Storefronts, sharing eligible products with ChatGPT, Copilot and Meta by default | GTINs, product categories and English option names for the Google feed |
| Agent files | /agents.md, /llms.txt and a UCP profile, served automatically | Knowledge Base FAQs, which improve answers but not how often you appear |
Where Shopify stores lose visibility
Old robots.txt.liquid rules
Shopify’s Help Center notes that older templates can still block /policies/ and /search. Blocking OAI-SearchBot keeps you out of ChatGPT search, OpenAI says. We rebuild the template on Shopify’s current rules and check any proxy in front of the store, since its rules run first.
Content that needs JavaScript
ChatGPT’s and Perplexity’s crawlers don’t run JavaScript. They miss reviews loaded by script or iframe, and prices a headless build renders in the browser. We server-render ratings, price and stock, and fix headless routes so Shopify Catalog includes them.
Markup that stops at price
The product markup Shopify documents has no ratings, shipping or returns. Yet its Agentic page scores listings on reviews and policies, and Google’s agentic checkout reads returns from Merchant Center. We complete your policies, mark them up and set returns in Merchant Center.
Feeds missing identifiers
Google says missing or incorrect GTINs may limit visibility. We fill the Barcode field from supplier data and map categories and variants. Microsoft says its Merchant Center feeds help inform Copilot, so we add its Shopify app too. See product feeds for AI shopping.
Thin collections and tag pages
In Dawn, a filtered collection points its canonical tag at the unfiltered page, so a filter can’t rank alone. Tag pages like /collections/all/tote stay crawlable. We write collection copy around how assistants choose products, build real collections for filters worth ranking and noindex tag pages.

Honest scope by market
Checkout inside AI assistants is US-first. For UK, EU and Gulf stores, the work is discovery: feeds, structured data, crawler access and measurement. If you also sell to US customers, ChatGPT and Copilot can reach them.
| Channel | Who can sell | Checkout |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Stores selling to US customers, based anywhere | Your own Shopify checkout |
| Microsoft Copilot | Stores selling to US customers | In Copilot, on by default |
| Google AI Mode and Gemini | US-based stores selling to US customers, with Merchant Center | In Google, still rolling out |
| Meta | Stores selling to the US, Canada or Mexico | In Meta, on by default |
Status from Shopify’s Help Center on 6 October 2026. Google says its agentic checkout reaches Canada and Australia next, then the UK.
Questions
Can I edit robots.txt on Shopify?
Yes, with a robots.txt.liquid template in your theme. Shopify recommends editing it in Liquid so its default rules stay current. Its support team can’t help with edits.
Do I need Shopify Plus?
No. Shopify Catalog, which feeds ChatGPT, Copilot and Meta, needs the Starter plan or higher. Our fixes live in your theme, product data and feeds.
Does ChatGPT checkout work with my store?
Yes, through your own checkout. ChatGPT opens your Shopify checkout in its in-app browser or a new tab, so your payment methods apply. You must sell to US customers.
Do I need a new theme?
Usually not. Shopify’s Dawn and Horizon themes already print canonical tags and product markup. Rebuild only if price and stock render in the browser, as a web development project.
How do you measure AI traffic?
Shopify’s Agentic page reports sales and sessions for each AI channel, and GA4 has an AI Assistant channel. GA4 misses orders inside Copilot, Google and Meta checkouts, so we count those in Shopify. See AI assistant traffic in GA4.
