Answer engine optimization (AEO): what it is vs SEO and GEO

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring your pages so that a search engine or AI assistant can lift a direct, correct answer from them and attribute it to you. It differs from classic SEO, which competes for a ranked position, and from GEO, which is about being synthesized into a generated answer across your whole web presence. AEO is narrower and more page-level: write the answer first, make it extractable, and make sure the engine knows who you are.

In short
  • AEO is page-level: write the answer in the first 40 to 60 words, use question headings and HTML tables, and make sure the engine knows who you are
  • Engines start from a search index, then lift the passage that answers a sub-question most cleanly. Ranking gets you considered, extractability gets you used
  • FAQ rich results left Google Search on 7 May 2026. Keep accurate FAQ markup if it is cheap, never pay for it
  • No engine guarantees placement. An agency that promises one is selling something else

The answer engines that matter

An answer engine is anything that returns a composed answer instead of a list of links. In 2026 the ones that drive real traffic and influence are:

  • Google AI Overviews, the generated summary above classic results, and Google AI Mode, the full conversational search tab.
  • ChatGPT search, which pulls live web results into ChatGPT answers.
  • Perplexity, built from the start as a cited answer engine.
  • Bing Copilot and the AI summaries in Bing results.
  • Voice assistants, including Gemini on Android and Siri, which read one answer aloud and rarely offer a second.

How answer engines select and compose answers

Google is the only one that documents this for site owners in detail. Its page AI features and your website says AI Overviews and AI Mode use a "query fan-out" technique: the system issues multiple related searches across subtopics, then identifies supporting pages from all of them. The eligibility bar is being indexed and eligible for a snippet, and Google states there are "no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary." It also asks that structured data match the visible text on the page.

OpenAI's ChatGPT search help page explains that ChatGPT rewrites your question into targeted queries, sends them to third-party search providers, may issue follow-up queries, and then "ranks search results using multiple factors intended to help users find relevant, reliable information." To be eligible you must allow the OAI-SearchBot crawler, which OpenAI's crawler documentation distinguishes from GPTBot (training) and ChatGPT-User (user-requested fetches).

Perplexity's crawler docs describe PerplexityBot, which indexes pages to surface and link them in results, and Perplexity-User, which fetches a page on demand. Perplexity does not publish ranking factors.

What the engines share: they start from a search index, then read candidate pages and pick passages that answer the sub-question cleanly. An Ahrefs analysis from July 2025 of 1.9 million AI Overview citations found 76.1% of cited pages ranked in the top 10 for the query. Ranking gets you considered. Extractability gets you used.

The page patterns that get used as answers

The shape of a section that gets quoted
H2 written as the question people typematches a fan-out query
The answer, in 40 to 60 words that could stand alone if quotedwhat gets lifted
Table or definitionHTML, not an image
Specifics with sourcesnumbers, dates, short quotes
Explanation, caveats, detailfor the humans who kept reading
Short FAQ blockmore question-shaped passages; schema optional
Repeat the pattern for every H2 that maps to a buyer question. The red row is the only one the engine needs; the rest is why humans trust it.

Direct answer in the first 40 to 60 words

Open every page, and every H2 section, with the answer. One to three plain sentences that could stand alone if quoted. Then the explanation, the caveats and the detail.

Question headings

Write H2s and H3s as the questions people type: "How long does it take?" rather than "Timelines". It helps the engine match a fan-out query to a section, and it helps humans scan.

Tables and definitions

Comparisons, specs, pricing tiers and timelines belong in HTML tables, not images. Definitions work best as a term followed by one sentence of definition, the way a glossary does. Both are easy for a model to lift intact.

Specifics, sources and quotes

The 2023 GEO research paper tested nine page edits and found that adding quotations, statistics and citations raised visibility in generated answers the most, while keyword stuffing was the only edit that scored below the unoptimized baseline. Vague claims don't get quoted. Specific ones do.

FAQ sections and FAQ schema, with an honest note

A short FAQ block at the end of a page is still useful because it adds more question-shaped passages. The schema side needs care. Google's FAQPage documentation records that from September 2023 the FAQ rich result was only shown for well-known, authoritative government and health websites, and that from 7 May 2026 the FAQ rich result no longer appears in Google Search at all. Google's May 2026 notice said site owners may remove the markup but don't have to. So add FAQPage schema if it's cheap and accurate, since other engines may still read it, but don't expect a visual rich result from Google and don't pay anyone for it.

The entity side

Answer engines attribute answers to entities, not URLs. If the engine can't resolve who you are, it quotes you less and describes you worse. The basics:

  • Organization schema on the homepage with name, logo, URL, founding date, and contact details.
  • sameAs links in that schema to your LinkedIn, Crunchbase, Wikidata entry if you have one, GitHub, G2 or Trustpilot profile, and any Wikipedia page.
  • Consistent name, address and phone number everywhere, including Google Business Profile, directories and review sites. Google's AI features guidance names Business Profile and Merchant Center data as inputs worth keeping current.
  • Third-party sources that describe you in the same words you use. Assistants trust a claim more when a review site, a directory and a press mention agree with your about page.

AEO vs GEO vs classic SEO

  Classic SEO AEO GEO
Goal Rank in a list and earn a click Be the extracted answer, attributed to you Be cited or named inside a synthesized answer
Unit of work Page and link profile Passage, heading, table, schema Whole web presence, including third-party sources
Where it shows Ten blue links Snippets, AI Overviews, voice answers ChatGPT, Perplexity, AI Mode, shopping agents
Main metric Position, clicks Snippet and answer ownership, citations Mentions, citations, assistant referrals
Risk if done badly Lost traffic Engine answers with a competitor Engine describes you wrongly or not at all

Most sites need all three, and the boundaries are fuzzy. At ROAS Expert we fold AEO and GEO into one programme we call agentic SEO, because once an assistant can also compare and buy, the answer page and the product feed become the same problem. Our guide to GEO for ecommerce covers the store side.

A 10-step AEO checklist

Step 01Confirm crawl access

Googlebot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Bingbot must reach your key pages. Check robots.txt, CDN bot rules and any firewall.

Step 02Check the render

Main content must be HTML text, not something that appears only after client-side JavaScript runs.

Step 03List 30 to 50 real buyer questions

From sales calls, support tickets and the Search Console query report.

Step 04Map each question to one page and section

If no page exists, write one.

Step 05Rewrite the openings

The answer in the first 40 to 60 words of each mapped section.

Step 06Question headings and HTML tables

Turn question-shaped topics into H2s and H3s; move comparisons out of prose and images into tables.

Step 07Add specifics

Numbers with sources, dated facts, short quotes from named people or documents.

Step 08Add and validate schema

Organization with sameAs, plus Product or SoftwareApplication where it matches visible content.

Step 09Fix entity consistency

Google Business Profile, directories and review sites must agree on name, description and contact details.

Step 10Set up measurement before publishing

A GA4 channel for assistant referrals, a Search Console baseline and a saved prompt set to re-run monthly.

What an AEO service should include

Agencies now sell "answer engine optimization services" with wide variation in what's inside. A credible engagement should give you, at minimum: a crawl and render audit against the bots above, an entity audit covering schema and third-party consistency, a question-to-page map built from real buyer questions, rewritten openings for the priority pages, and a measurement setup you own. Every change should have a named owner.

Questions to ask before you pay:

  • Which prompts will you test, and can I see the list before we start?
  • What do you measure and in which tools that I keep access to?
  • Which of your recommendations are backed by official documentation, and which are your judgement?
  • Are you selling FAQ schema or an "AI file" as a deliverable, and if so, why, given Google's guidance?
  • Who writes the content, and do they know my product well enough to add real specifics?
Walk away if

An agency promises a guaranteed citation or a number one AI answer. OpenAI says placement is not guaranteed and Google says the same about AI features.

If an agency promises a guaranteed citation or a number one AI answer, walk away. OpenAI's own help page says placement is not guaranteed, and Google says the same about appearing in AI features. Our note on how to choose a growth partner has a longer version of this conversation.

How to measure AEO

Google counts impressions and clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode inside the normal Web search type in Search Console, so watch impressions and position for your question-shaped queries rather than hunting for a separate AI report. Bing is further ahead: Search Engine Journal reported in February 2026 that Bing Webmaster Tools added an AI Performance report in public preview showing how often each page is cited in Copilot and Bing AI answers, including sampled grounding queries.

In GA4, visits from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, copilot.microsoft.com and gemini.google.com arrive as referrals. Create a custom channel group so they're visible as their own channel. A November 2025 SEOWorks guide uses the source regex bard|chatgpt|openai|claude|copilot|gemini|perplexity|grok. Some assistant clicks carry no referrer, so treat the figure as a minimum. Then run your saved prompt set monthly and log three things per prompt: are you named, are you linked, and is what's said about you correct. Our piece on AI visibility for SaaS and AI startups has a template.

Questions

What is answer engine optimization?

Answer engine optimization is structuring pages and entity data so that search engines and AI assistants can extract a direct, correct answer from your site and attribute it to you.

How is AEO different from SEO?

SEO competes for a ranked position and a click. AEO competes to be the answer itself, lifted from your page into a snippet, an AI Overview or a spoken reply. Good SEO is usually required first, because answer engines pick from pages that already rank.

Does FAQ schema still help with AEO?

Not for a Google rich result. Google limited FAQ rich results to government and health sites in 2023 and stopped showing them entirely on 7 May 2026. The markup is harmless to keep and other engines may read it, but a visible FAQ section on the page matters more than the schema.

Do I need a special AI file like llms.txt to appear in AI answers?

Google's documentation says no special files or markup are needed for AI Overviews or AI Mode, and OpenAI and Perplexity only require that their search crawlers can access your pages. Spend the time on clear answers and entity data instead.

What should answer engine optimization services cost?

It depends on page count and how much rewriting is needed. A focused audit with a fix list is a reasonable first purchase, and ours start at $1,000. Be wary of anyone quoting guaranteed placements, since none of the engines offer that.
