Meta Advantage+ in 2026: what to automate and what to keep manual
Automate budget, placements and audience expansion once your purchase data is clean. Keep five things in your own hands: the conversion event and value you optimize for, who you exclude, any creative enhancement that rewrites or redraws your brand assets, the offer, and the landing page. Then judge the result with a holdout test, not the ROAS Ads Manager shows you.
Two things changed since mid-2025. Advantage+ is no longer a separate campaign type, just a status a Sales campaign gets when it uses campaign budget, Advantage+ audience and Advantage+ placements. And the existing customer budget cap, which let you limit spend on past buyers, is gone.
What does Advantage+ mean in 2026?
On May 29, 2025, Meta extended a streamlined Advantage+ setup to sales and app campaigns, starting with selected advertisers (Meta for Developers). Now, when you choose the Sales, App promotion or Leads objective in Ads Manager, most campaigns start with Advantage+ on. Narrow the budget, audience or placements too far and that section switches to Advantage+ off. Meta says manual campaign features are all still available.
The old Advantage+ shopping campaigns are finished. Meta's Marketing API v25.0 changelog says creating, duplicating and updating them is no longer allowed from v25.0, with all versions following on May 19, 2026. Its developer docs say campaigns never migrated keep their old settings and can't be edited, so rebuild any that still run.
The lineup for Sales campaigns, in Meta's own names:
- Advantage+ sales campaigns: a Sales campaign with the next three settings on.
- Campaign budget, which Meta also calls Advantage+ campaign budget: one budget at campaign level, moved between ad sets in real time.
- Advantage+ audience: applied by default where available. Age, gender, detailed targeting and custom audience inclusions become suggestions. Locations, minimum age, custom audience exclusions and languages stay hard controls.
- Advantage+ placements: delivery across Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp, Threads and Audience Network.
- Advantage+ creative: Meta's help page lists 31 enhancements and labels 17 as using, or able to use, generative AI. Some may be on by default, and you can turn any of them off.
- Advantage+ catalog ads: products from your catalog picked per person. For new Sales campaigns, Meta is gradually replacing the catalog ads toggle with Product data at campaign level, on by default, plus Products from your catalog as the creative source for each ad. Each campaign can then use one catalog.
Which controls still exist?
Existing customers
The existing customer budget cap is no longer available, and Meta's replacement is manual. To spend nothing on past buyers, add a custom audience exclusion under Show more controls. To cap spend instead, run two ad sets with the same creative under one campaign budget. The first targets your existing-customer audiences, with a maximum spend limit and Use as a suggestion unticked. The second excludes them. Meta's API docs still count the campaign as Advantage+ when at least one ad set uses Advantage+ audience.
A maximum spend limit is managed over a Sunday to Saturday week, so a single day can run over it. Also define Engaged audience and Existing customers under audience segments in Advertising settings, so Ads Manager can break results down by new, engaged and existing. Meta says this may not be available to every account yet.
Location and age
Locations are a hard limit unless you select Reach more people likely to respond to your ads, which lets delivery go beyond them. Leave it off if you can't ship there. Minimum age can't go below 18 (higher in some countries), and you can raise it to 25 or exclude a custom audience without turning Advantage+ off.
Account controls in Advertising settings apply to every campaign without changing its Advantage+ status: allowed locations, a minimum age, brand-protection exclusions and an employee exclusion. Meta is introducing them gradually, and changes can take up to 48 hours to reach existing campaigns.
Placements and brand safety
Excluding a placement in any ad set, or opting out of mobile or desktop, turns Advantage+ off. Exclusions also leak by default. Eligible advertisers are opted into limited spend on excluded placements, where Meta aims to spend around 5% of the budget on each excluded placement when it expects better results. For a hard exclusion, open Manage excluded placements and switch it off.
Account-level placement controls keep Advantage+ on, but they only cover Audience Network, Facebook Marketplace and the Facebook right column. For what your ads appear next to, use brand suitability controls: an inventory filter, block lists and topic exclusions, set for the business or ad account in the Brand Safety and Suitability Center or per ad set. The inventory filter defaults to Expanded. Moderate and Limited lower reach and can raise costs. Meta lists these controls as rolling out gradually, and none of them is on its list of settings that turn Advantage+ off.
Creative enhancements
You can switch each enhancement on or off per ad, or in bulk from the Ads tab when the ads share a format. Two other settings matter too. Test new creative features lets Meta apply enhancements still in testing to eligible campaigns, and only eligible advertisers see it. The branding feature, still rolling out, applies your saved colors, font, logo and tone, and it's on by default for ads that use a generative enhancement.
What should you automate?
Budget. Use campaign budget with as few ad sets as your constraints allow. It moves spend toward the best opportunities in real time, and an ad set usually exits the learning phase after about 50 results in a week. Say your cost per purchase is $40. Fifty purchases a week means $2,000 a week per ad set, about $8,700 a month. At $5,000 a month even one ad set falls short, so don't split further. Use spend limits only for hard rules such as the existing-customer cap.
Placements. Keep Advantage+ placements on, handle adjacency with brand suitability settings, and put any exclusion that account controls cover there. In an experiment Meta ran, ad sets using Advantage+ placements averaged an 11.7% lower cost per action than manual placements. That's Meta's number, so treat it as a reason to test, not a forecast.
Audience expansion, once your signals are good. That means the Meta Pixel and Conversions API both send Purchase with value and currency, without double counting, and your customer audiences stay fresh. Advantage+ audience then treats your targeting as a hint and looks for buyers beyond it. Meta recommends testing it for almost every campaign type except retargeting, which has its own rules (see retargeting after privacy changes).
What should you keep manual?
The conversion event and value. Advantage+ chases whatever you count as a result. Optimize for Purchase, not a cheaper upstream event, and send a value that reflects margin where you can. ROAS, MER or POAS covers how.
Exclusions. The system doesn't know your shipping map or which buyers would come back anyway. Set locations, exclude or cap existing customers, and exclude employees.
Creative enhancements that change brand assets. Meta says it may adjust the media and text you upload while keeping your core message. Image generation, Visual touch-ups, Video touch-ups, Enhance media text, Show summaries and Translations all create pixels or words your team didn't make. Turn them off, then test one at a time against the same ad without it, as in creative testing for DTC. Non-generative ones such as Adjust brightness and contrast or Highlight carousel card carry less risk. Keep them if the previews look right.
The offer and the landing page. Enhance CTA can add promotion details, such as a percentage off or free delivery, to your call to action. Show spotlights and Reveal details over time pull content from your website into the ad, and Add product browsing may send people to a product experience on Facebook or Instagram before your site (Meta). Your site copy becomes ad copy, so an expired promo on a product page can end up in an ad. Set the offer yourself, keep pages current, and leave product browsing off unless a test says otherwise. Our landing page checklist covers the page.
How do you know if it's working?
Under the standard attribution model, a purchase can be credited within 1 or 7 days of a link click, 1 day of an impression, or 1 day of an engagement such as a non-link click or a 5-second video play. Meta notes some accounts still use earlier versions of these settings while the change rolls out.
Three things flatter Advantage+ in that number.
- Without an exclusion, it can reach past buyers and recent visitors who were likely to buy anyway, and the cap that limited this is gone. The audience segments breakdown shows where spend went.
- View-through and engage-through credit purchases that followed no link click.
- Standard attribution counts every credited purchase. Incremental attribution counts only those Meta's model predicts the ad caused. Meta's own example shows 100 conversions under standard and 70 under incremental.
So add two column sets before you judge anything. Compare attribution settings shows 1-day view, 1-day click, 7-day click and 28-day click side by side. Compare attribution models, then Incremental, adds Meta's modeled incremental results to any campaign, for dates from April 1, 2025. You can also make incremental the attribution model of a new Sales campaign optimizing for conversions or value, but bid controls aren't allowed and the model can't be changed after publishing.
Modeled results are still Meta's model of Meta's ads. The real check is a holdout. Conversion Lift is now self-serve in Experiments at no extra cost. Meta's guide asks for a campaign from the past year with at least $5,000 of spend and 500 conversions, scaled up for campaigns longer than 90 days. Self-serve tests also need Conversions API events with an event match quality above 5, or another supported data source sending a lower-funnel event. That second route isn't open to advertisers mainly targeting countries affected by the ePrivacy Directive. Say your cost per purchase is $40. Then 500 purchases cost $20,000, so a campaign needs about $6,700 a month to qualify within a quarter. Below that, run a geo holdout. Our guide to ROAS, MER and POAS covers both tests and how to turn a result into a target.
Decision table
| Setting | Default | Our call | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Budget strategy | Campaign budget | Automate | Spend follows results across ad sets |
| Audience | Advantage+ audience | Automate, with controls | Suggestions guide delivery without fencing it |
| Reach more people likely to respond to your ads | Off unless selected | Keep off | Spend where you can't deliver is waste |
| Existing customers | No cap | Exclude, or cap in a second ad set | Past buyers inflate platform ROAS |
| Placements | Advantage+ placements | Automate | Other controls handle brand safety |
| Limited spend on excluded placements | On for eligible advertisers | Off for hard exclusions | Otherwise Meta may still spend around 5% on each |
| Inventory filter | Expanded | Moderate only if your brand needs it | Narrower filters cut reach |
| Generative enhancements | Some may be on | Off, then test one at a time | They make text and images you didn't |
| Enhance CTA and Add product browsing | Check each ad | Off unless tested | They change the offer or the destination |
| Conversion event and value | Your choice | Purchase, with margin-based value | The system chases what you send |
| Attribution model | Standard | Standard, plus the incremental column | You see credited and modeled results together |
Setup checklist
- In Events Manager, confirm Pixel and Conversions API both send Purchase with value and currency, with event match quality above 5.
- In Advertising settings, define the Engaged audience and Existing customers segments.
- Set account controls if you have them: locations, minimum age, employee exclusions and any Audience Network, Marketplace or right column exclusions.
- Under Creative features in Advertising settings, untick Test new creative features unless you want features in testing on live campaigns.
- Set the inventory filter and block lists in the Brand Safety and Suitability Center.
- Create a Sales campaign with Advantage+ on, campaign budget and one or two ad sets.
- Choose Purchase as the conversion event, and Maximize value of conversions if you send margin-based values.
- In Audience, set locations and minimum age, then exclude existing customers or build the two-ad-set cap. Leave Reach more people likely to respond to your ads unselected unless you serve those places.
- Leave Advantage+ placements on. If you must exclude one, turn off limited spend for it under Manage excluded placements.
- At ad level, switch off generative enhancements you haven't tested, check Enhance CTA and Add product browsing, and preview every placement.
- In reporting, add Compare attribution settings, the Incremental attribution model column and the Audience segments breakdown.
- Book a Conversion Lift test or geo holdout before you scale budget.
